Working after studies in Australia

Australia is always in need of skilled people and Australia has been building its population through immigration from the past 200 years.   Australia welcomes international students and will continue to provide an opportunity for those who have the necessary qualifications and skills to find an Australian employer willing to sponsor them for a permanent visa.

Some of the categories of visa that are available for International Students:

There are also several other visa categories open to international students, and Australia has a very straightforward path to permanent residency using a points system. Bonus points are awarded for Australian qualification.  If students just want to stay and work after they graduate, then they can apply and obtain a work visa.

Some of the categories of visa that are available for International Students:

  • 485 Skilled Graduate Temporary Visa - This visa is the most common option available to international students after graduating.
  • 442 Occupational Trainee Visa - Another option for international students, the 442 visa is for students to improve their work skills for up to two years while being sponsored by an employer.

  • 487 Regional Sponsored Visa - This visa provides a pathway for permanent residency while allowing one to work for 3 years and work in a specialized regional area
  • 887 Skilled Regional Residence Visa - The 887 visa awards one permanent residency and with this one can live and work in Australia permanently. One must have already lived in Australia for two years, have a year of work experience and have sufficient points.
  • 885 Skilled Independent Residence Visa - The 885 visa allows one to live as a permanent resident and work without needing to be sponsored
  • 886 Skilled Sponsor Resident Visa - The 886 visa allows an overseas student to apply for permanent residency and work while being sponsored by an employer.

However students should be aware that merely by studying in Australia does not guarantee permanent residence or full time jobs. The changes to Australia's skilled migration program announced recently will ensure that it operates as a demand rather than a supply driven system that delivers the skills most needed in the economy.

International students currently studying in Australia who hold a vocational, higher education or postgraduate student visa will still be able to apply for permanent residence if their occupation is on the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL)

The new SOL, to be developed by Skills Australia, will be tightly focused on high value skills that will assist in addressing Australia’s future skills needs. It will deliver a mix of skills across the professions and trades in areas such as healthcare, engineering and mining. The SOL will be available in April 2010 and will be reviewed annually.

Students currently studying a course in an occupation that is not on the new SOL will have until the end of 2012 to apply for a temporary skilled graduate visa which will enable them to spend up to 18 months in Australia to acquire work experience and find an Australian employer willing to sponsor them on completion of their course.
