A scholarship (or a grant or a fellowship) is a sum of money awarded to a student in order to help him or her further his or her education. Scholarship money can come from any number of sources. There are scholarships provided by governments, corporations, universities, colleges or any organization.

There are various kinds of scholarships available for students wanting to study abroad.

Scholarships for studying abroad are majorly categorised as:

Merit-basis These scholarships are awarded to high-achieving international students. The merit-based scholarships evaluate a student's merit on the basis of their academic records or their performance in scholarship tests.
Student specific Students who qualify based on factors such as gender, race, religion, family and medical history can apply to such scholarships.
Destination specific Destination scholarships are awarded by a country to students planning to pursue a study abroad program in that particular country. They are awarded as an incentive to study in that country instead of elsewhere Examples are : Scholarships offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand or the Chevening fellowship granted by the UK Government for international students from Commonwealth countries.
Subject-specific Subject-specific scholarships are designed for students with definite educational and career interests. They may be funded by federal or state governments, corporations or private institutions for students who plan to pursue a specific field of study.
Need Based As the name suggests, need-based scholarships are awarded to candidates who belong to financially weaker sections. This kind of scholarships is awarded to candidates to allow them to complete their education in spite of not being able to meet the financial requirements
Athletic scholarships These are for students who excel at their sport. Athletic scholarships are common in the United States, but in a majority of countries they are rare or non-existent.

Most scholarships are provided in the form of fee waivers and are awarded to meritorious students. Undoubtedly, the competition to avail these scholarships is very high and hence, it is of utmost importance that students fulfil all the eligibility criteria.
