Eligibility for admission to an MBA program in the US

For most US universities the eligibility criteria for admissions to the MBA programs is 16 years of undergraduate education. This includes four years of education after completion of High School/Junior College from an accredited college/university or its equivalent. For an Indian aspirant, this means that a three-year degree programme does not meet the eligibility criterion. To be considered for admission in US, an Indian student must have a post-graduate degree or a professional four-year degree like engineering or a degree from a recognized one-year university affiliated programme. Completion of the first year of a two-year degree course may not meet the eligibility criterion of most US business schools.

Many universities look into the leadership qualities in a candidate. Students should have demonstrated ability in work place or elsewhere of their strong leadership qualities. So, it is highly recommended that students talk about their leadership achievements in their personal essays. People who are focused on their goals and show an ability to contribute significantly to the business world are ideal candidates for a business school.

Other Requirements:

GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test): Securing a good GMAT score is one of the most important criteria for any business school.

TOEFL or IELTS Score: For most Universities students must demonstrate English language competency by providing a TOEFL score of 79 on the internet based test (iBT) or IELTS score of 6.5 and above

Letters of recommendation/ references/ assessment reports either academic or/and professional are required. Usually two or three such letters are required from individuals other than family members assessing the applicant’s performance either in an academic institution or at the work place. It is advisable to get references from both academic as well as professional sources outlining leadership qualities.

Personal statements/admission essays have to be submitted. These essays are a very important component of the admission. Care should be taken to explain how this MBA will help him including his future career plans. Emphasis should be on the students aims and objectives and his aspiration for success.

Work experience

Admission to the best business schools in MBA programs requires a couple of years of work experience. While this is not mandatory for all schools, it definitely is preferred by most business schools

Work experience is one of the most important criterion for business school admission.

A detailed Résumé is an important part of the application. It should include all information of professional work experience along with details like position(s) held, achievements and scope of work.

Interview

Most top business schools will take interview of the student to know them better. The interview could be with a business school representative or "third party" representatives, staff, faculty or alumni of the college or simply a telephonic interview.

These interviews are usually informal and more of an opportunity to exchange information. The interviewer will try to judge the students abilities and interests in management and leadership.
