The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for Australia is an integrity assessment that all applicants for a student visa must provide to substantiate that they are coming to Australia temporarily to gain a quality education and intend to use the student visa program for its intended purpose only.
Most Australian universities have their own set of assessments and once you have cleared their GTE assessment then they will issue you a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). With this confirmation of enrollment, you can then progress to applying for a student visa.
GTE is a very important factor based on which the decision of your application is made. If you clear this step then your student visa for Australia is successful. But you fail to meet the GTE criteria your application could be refused.
To satisfy the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, your individual circumstances must Demonstrate that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily to gain an education. The factors that are considered during assessment of the GTE requirement include:
• your personal circumstances in your home country
• your potential circumstances in Australia
• the value of the program to your future
• your immigration history, and
• any other matter that is relevant to your intention to remain in Australia temporarily.
If you are under18 years of age, the intentions of your parent, legal guardian or spouse will also be considered. The information provided in your visa application and supporting documentation will be used by the visa officer to assess your student visa application. You may be requested to provide additional information in relation to the factors set out above.

The visa officer will need to understand your current personal circumstances, the circumstances that led to you decide to study in Australia, and your future intentions. All applicants must provide a personal statement (Statement of Purpose – SOP) in English addressing the GTE requirement.

• Provide details of any gap in your studies f more than six months and an explanation of what you were doing during these gaps (if any).
• Provide details of your proposed course of study and how this will benefit you in your future goals

• If your intended program is not related to your previous study or employment, explain the reason for the change in career
• Provide an explanation for why you chose to study in Australia and at the institute or university specifically
• Provide details of any family members living in Australia, including their current visa status and any employment they currently have
*Note: The SOP must be written by you (the student), not an agent, friend or family member, as it’s important that it matches your current English language ability. You should provide evidence to support the claims made in your Statement of Purpose as this speeds up the visa process
