Working after studies OPT / CPT / H1B

Students that successfully complete the Bachelors or Master’s program can opt for the below work options:

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

 After completing the studies student visa holders are eligible to apply for up to one year of paid experience called OPT. This visa allows them to gain work experience in their chosen career.

To be eligible for this students must be on student visa for a minimum of nine months and the OPT application must be filed at least 90 days prior to completion of their studies. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). However, all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT.

OPT Extension for students for 24 months: If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may apply for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

 This is an employment option available for students where practical training employment is considered to be an integral part of the academic program. CPT is defined to be alternative work/study, internship or any other type of required practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with university / colleges. CPT requires that the students have a valid student visa for minimum 9 months and are in proper standing in terms of academics and GPA. The Designated School official (DSO) at university / college has tgo authorize this on the I-20. Please note that each university has different procedures regarding the CPT and more you can obtain more information by getting in touch with the International Student Services office at the university

H1B Work Visa

The H1B visa is the official and primary USA work visa available to people from all around the world. This visa allows US companies to employ graduate level workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized fields such as in IT, finance, accounting, architecture, engineering, mathematics, science, medicine, etc.The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services sets a limit on how many H1B visas are issued each year. These numbers can change as per regulations of the US One of the main advantages of the H1B visa is that it’s a “dual intent” visawhich means that one can apply for Green card (legal permanent residency).

The H1 B visa is typically valid from 3 to 6 years and entitles spouses and children to accompany the main applicant
